Our track record equips us to respond to challenging situations

Northstowe, in South Cambridgeshire, is a pioneering project to build the UK’s first planned New Town since Milton Keynes, providing up to 10,000 new homes around a new town centre.

We supported the Phase 1 planning application through preparation of an Energy Statement and negotiations with the Council to agree a robust and deliverable approach based on a prioritisation of energy efficiency measures to reduce demand before the specification of suitable micro-generation technologies for the relatively low density Phase 1.

Headline sustainability commitments include Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4 and BREEAM ‘Very Good’ as a minimum, with the energy strategy also future-proofed to enable compliance with potential future exemplar standards, such as the ‘zero carbon home’.

We also prepared a scoping report for a Low Carbon Sustainable Living Strategy, with the following recommended features:

  • Setting up a community governance body to have ongoing management responsibility for sustainable living measures
  • Setting up a community extranet information system
  • Providing residents and businesses with a ‘green lifestyle pack’
  • A programme of monitoring for building performance, uptake of sustainability services and resident satisfaction
