CEEQUAL

The environmental impacts of infrastructure projects can be looked at using the CEEQUAL assessment method which was developed by the Institution of Civil Engineers and CIRIA.

CEEQUAL offers a thorough infrastructure environmental assessment procedure which examines 12 categories:

  • Project Management
  • Land Use
  • Landscape
  • Ecology & Biodiversity
  • The Historic Environment
  • Water resources and the Water Environment
  • Energy and Carbon
  • Material Use
  • Waste Management
  • Transport
  • Effects on Neighbours
  • Relations with the Local Community and other Stakeholders

The assessment process has been designed by engineers for the industry so the actual application is proving to be straight forward and practical. Much of the information that we require for an assessment is that which is being provided already.

At the start of the project a list of relevant questions is drawn from the CEEQUAL manual. This checklist is monitored throughout the design and construction to enable the supporting evidence is gathered. The final report is verified by a CEEQUAL verifier and a certificate is issued.  The most cost effective approach to assessments is looking at them at the early stages when changes can be implemented relatively easily.

What are the benefits for our clients?

We are beginning to see a CEEQUAL requirement in some planning approvals for major regeneration projects. Clients embracing CEEQUAL assessment can demonstrate good corporate social responsibility, gaining welcome publicity and marketing opportunities which in turn may help in securing future development opportunities.
