Modern methods of construction

Modern Methods of Construction is the name given to construction methods covering a wide range of approaches to building, including off-site manufacturing. All off-site manufacturing falls within the modern methods definitions, but not all modern methods use off-site manufacture of complete building elements. Modern methods of construction can make significant improvement to:

  • Reducing construction time by simplifying the construction process
  • Improving quality and reducing defects by moving operations from site to factory conditions
  • Speeding achievements of a weathertight envelope
  • Improving safety by reducing the number of site operations
  • Improving predictability for the project and productivity of the workforce
  • Contributing to innovation
  • Mitigating effects of skill shortages

However, these advantages are not automatically achieved. The first step is to identify what improvements are required and target methods to make those improvements. Careful and early consideration of all aspects of design, procurement, quality, site management and commissioning is needed for the improvements to be realised.
