For most schemes, the mandatory energy elements of the Code can be achieved through the incorporation of solar thermal and/or solar PV panels on individual houses. Once Code Level 4 (a 44% improvement on 2006 Building Regulations) is sought, serious consideration must be given to a community heating network with either biomass or CHP facilities. For Code Levels 5 (a 100% improvement on Building Regulations) and Level 6 (zero carbon), biomass or CHP community heating is likely to be essential and may have to be combined with PV panels. It is currently anticipated that Zero Carbon compliance will require a 70% improvement on 2006 Building Regulations, although our May Newsletter highlighted how challenging this will be in practice.
