Recent high fuel costs, and longstanding heat network inefficiencies have been to the detriment of heat network customers. However, the Government’s £32m Heat Network Efficiency Scheme (HNES) provides a route to lock in long-term running cost and carbon savings.

Commencing in February 2023, the HNES will provide grant support to existing heat networks or communal heating projects that are operating sub-optimally. The scheme offers two types of grants, with Revenue Grants providing 100% of the funding towards procurement or mobilisation of Optimisation Studies, and Capital Grants providing up to 50% of the delivery costs of intervention or improvement measures. The Scheme opens to applicants in February 2023, with funding rounds taking place bi-monthly, through to March 2024. The HNES is expected to be a highly competitive scheme, with a detailed application process.

At Hodkinson, our extensive heat network knowledge and expertise allow us to offer support with funding applications, optimisation studies, and ongoing management of successful capital grant funding.
