Results from our recent Façade Optimisation work indicate that Thermal Bridging Analysis represents the most cost effective alternative to expensive fabric uplift measures and/or renewable energy generation systems.

Thermal Bridging Analysis is appropriate for all high rise construction projects and ensures that detailed structural elements which frequently penetrate the insulation envelope of a building are correctly specified.

As a result the assessed heat losses through thermal bridging are significantly reduced, equating to lower CO2 emissions and an improved fabric performance; both important drivers for Part L compliance, meeting planning targets and constructing high quality buildings.

As part of a recent planning application for around 650 apartments in London, Hodkinson Consultancy demonstrated that a build cost reduction of over £1million could be achieved by innovative thermal insulation details. The cost savings were accrued through a relaxation in the U-value of the glazing, and a significant reduction in the number of PV panels required.

As with most cost saving measures, early intervention and ongoing design team interaction is crucial to the success of Thermal Bridging. We have been working with design teams at planning stage aiming to improve the overall fabric efficiency of buildings through bespoke 3D thermal bridging analysis. This will enable our clients to deliver higher quality buildings at lower cost.
