We are delighted that the planning application for new teaching facilities and student residential accommodation for Bournemouth University has recently been approved by Bournemouth Borough Council. We were appointed by ThreeSixtyDevelopments to undertake complex wind analysis of the development proposals.

The development is situated in central Bournemouth and includes the provision of over 10,000 m2 of high quality teaching facilities for the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences plus a 9 to 14 storey residential student accommodation block providing 550 bed spaces.

We undertook complex wind analysis of the student accommodation block using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to assess the ground floor pedestrian environment. We were able to reassure the local authority that street level pedestrian conditions were likely to be in acceptable ranges when assessed against the Lawson Criteria.

Our CFD approach avoided the need for more time-consuming 3D wind tunnel model analysis and ensured the development was ready for the Planning Committee date.

We wish the University all the best with their expansion and look forward to working with the applicant in the future.
