Voluntary Net Zero Building Standard Live
A new voluntary industry standard, UK Net Zero Building Standard, was released on 01/03/2026. This standard arrives as the construction industry has been addressing regulatory change and economic challenges. It is industry-led and sets various annual operational limits for the UK’s built environment to limit its impacts on average global temperature rise to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels.
The standard states this aim is achievable if the entire building stock make changes. This is a commendable aim but only time will show the amount of voluntary change that will be adopted. The production of the standard does allow first movers to showcase the possibilities of the industries capabilities especially given the other challenges in the industry.
Compliance with the standard lasts one year and is based on meeting targets set by calendar year on embodied carbon, operational energy, water use, refrigerant GWP, renewable energy generation, and fossil fuel. The costs associated with standard include registration, administration and assessment costs.
